ASH Marvin Moser Clinical Hypertension
Award
The American Society of Hypertension is pleased to
announce the recipient of the First ASH Marvin Moser Clinical Hypertension
Award. This award recognizes a qualified Hypertension Clinician for
his or her dedication to the treatment and care of hypertensive patients.
The 2010 Award will be presented during the
ASH Twenty-Fifth Annual Scientific Meeting during the Awards Plenary
Session, to be held on Monday, May 3rd, 2010.

2009 Award Winner
Domenic A. Sica, MD
Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology

Dr. Domenic Sica is a Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology
at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University
in Richmond, Virginia where he also serves as the Chairman of the Division
of Clinical Pharmacology and Hypertension. Dr. Sica completed his undergraduate
training at Fordham University and subsequently obtained his medical
degree from the Medical College of Virginia. Thereafter, he completed
his medicine training at the Medical College of Virginia and a three-year
nephrology fellowship at the University of Texas Health Science Center
in San Antonio. Dr. Sica returned on faculty at the Medical College
of Virginia in 1981 where he currently holds the aforementioned appointments.
Dr. Sica is board certified in medicine, nephrology, hypertension,
and clinical pharmacology. Dr. Sica has published extensively in the
area(s) of hypertension, renal disease, and drug pharmacokinetics with
over 650 abstracts, publications, and chapters to his credit. He is
the co-editor of the recently published second edition of the text
Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapeutics. He is also a Senior Editor for
the Hypertension Primer, which is the primary publication of the American
Heart Association on the topic of hypertension.
Dr. Sica's research areas of interest include the pharmacotherapy
of hypertension, cardiovascular risk factors in adolescent African-Americans,
circadian variation in disease states, the pharmacokinetics of drugs
in renal failure, as well as the role of the renin-angiotensin axis
in disease state presentation and/or progression. Dr. Sica has been
extensively involved in a service and leadership capacity with a number
of the nephrology, clinical pharmacology, and hypertension organizations.
He currently is on the Board of Directors of the American Society of
Hypertension and is immediate Past-President of the Mid-Atlantic Chapter
of the American Society of Hypertension.
Dr. Sica has several times been awarded the Best Teaching Attending
award by the medicine housestaff and/or the medical student classes
at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University.
He has also recently been given the Distinguished Clinical Care award
by the Department of Medicine of Virginia Commonwealth University and
the inaugural Master Clinician Award by the International Society of
Hypertension in Blacks. He currently manages the Hypertension Clinic
at Virginia Commonwealth University. In so doing he has established
a working relationship with a number of the free-standing clinics and
a number of health care providers in the greater Richmond area to provide
both education and quality health care in the area of hypertension
therapy.
Finally, he has received a number of awards in the City of Richmond
for his commitment to the community and his involvement with youth.
He has established a scholarship fund for Richmond City Public High
School students in 1998 and he has personally provided over $ 100,000
in scholarship dollars in the past eleven years. Most recently he and
his wife have endowed a Single Mother Scholarship Fund at Virginia
Commonwealth University with several young women having successfully
completed school at Virginia Commonwealth University through these
scholarship monies.
ASH is pleased to announce a new award, the Marvin
Moser Clinical Hypertension Award. The Society will recognize
a qualified Hypertension Clinician for his or her dedication to the
treatment and care of hypertensive patients. The award will be given
at the ASH Annual Scientific Meeting. The award recipient will
receive a $5,000 honorarium, given by the Hypertension Education
Foundation, as well as complimentary registration to the ASH Annual
Scientific Meeting and reimbursement for travel expenses and hotel
accommodations for two nights to attend the Annual Meeting. In
addition, the award recipient will be recognized at the ASH Annual
Scientific Meeting during the Awards Plenary Session.
Qualifications
Candidate:

Must have been involved in treating
hypertensive patients as a major component of his or her practice

May have had an active role in developing guidelines
and in clinical trials that focus on improving blood pressure control |

deadline for submitting applications for the 2010 award will be December
16, 2009.
