ASH Young Scholar Award

The American Society of Hypertension is pleased to announce the winner of the
ASH 2010 Young Scholars Award.

Bina Joe, PhD
Dr. Bina Joe is an Associate Professor in Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Toledo College of Medicine. Dr. Joe received a National level Research Fellowship from the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in India, conducted her graduate studies in the Central Food Technological Research Institute under the guidance of Dr. Belur R. Lokesh and obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Mysore in 1997. After a brief postdoctoral position at the Indian Institute of Science, she worked in AstraZeneca India before moving to the Intramural Research Division of the National Institutes of Health as an International Fogarty Research Scholar in Dr. Ronald L. Wilder’s Laboratory.  There she began working on the genetics of complex diseases using rat models. In 2001, Dr. Joe was appointed as a Research Assistant Professor in Prof. John P. Rapp’s laboratory at the University of Toledo College of Medicine, which was then known as the Medical College of Ohio.  Over the years, she rose through the ranks and has held her current position of Associate Professor since 2007.

Dr. Joe’s research focuses on the genetics of hypertension. Her research is funded through multiple grants from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. She works predominantly with the Dahl Salt-sensitive (S) and Dahl Salt-resistant (R) rats that were inbred at her Institution by her predecessor Prof. Rapp.  Through sustained substitution mapping, research in Dr. Joe’s laboratory has markedly improved resolutions required for the identification of multiple genomic loci linked to hypertension. By combining transcriptomics with substitution mapping, Dr. Joe’s laboratory has prioritized candidate genes that were previously not implicated in hypertension. Her most recent work has identified that variants of a gene linked to hypertension in rats is also genetically associated with human essential hypertension.

Dr.  Joe has served as an adhoc member of several NIH study sections since 2005. She has also served as an International reviewer for the Medical Research Council of UK and the WELLCOME trust. She is a member of the Editorial Boards of Hypertension and Physiological Genomics. She is especially honored to be the sole awardee of the Young Scholar’s Award from the American Society of Hypertension in 2010, which marks the 25th Anniversary of the Society.

ASH members may nominate qualified young investigators for the 2010 ASH Young Scholar Award. The Young Scholar Award recognizes the achievements of outstanding young investigators in the field of hypertension.

The Young Scholar Award will be presented during the 25th Annual Scientific Meeting and Exposition of the American Society of Hypertension, Inc. This year the meeting will be held at the New York Hilton Hotel and Towers. The Awards Session is scheduled for Monday, May 3, 2010.

One award will be given, with $3,000 as a personal award, and $3,000 toward laboratory expenses ($6,000 total for the award). The awardee will also be asked to give a brief lecture presenting the research for which the award was given at the ASH Annual Scientific Meeting.

To qualify for the award, candidates must have received an advance professional degree within the last 15 years and be currently active in research in hypertension or related cardiovascular diseases. Only applicants from North America are considered.
