ASH Marvin Moser Clinical Hypertension Award

The American Society of Hypertension is pleased to announce the recipient of the ASH Marvin Moser Clinical Hypertension Award. This award recognizes a qualified Hypertension Clinician for his or her dedication to the treatment and care of hypertensive patients.

The 2010 Award will be presented during the ASH Twenty-Fifth Annual Scientific Meeting during the Awards Plenary Session, to be held on Monday, May 3rd, 2010.

2010 Award Winner

Joel Handler, MD
Kaiser Permanente

Joel Handler has been an attending physician for the Southern California Kaiser Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG) since 1979. Board certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine, geriatric medicine, and an ASH Specialist, he is a full time clinician seeing patients in an office based practice as well as the hospital and emergency department. In 1992 he initiated a hypertension clinic for difficult to control patients and sees referrals from throughout the southern California Kaiser system. Since 1992, he has chaired the Kaiser Orange County Critical Care Committee.

He has been section editor of the Journal of Clinical Hypertension since 2001 writing a Case Studies in Hypertension series based mostly on difficult to control hypertension patients seen in the clinic and hospital. He has given lectures throughout the Southern California Kaiser system as well as the national Kaiser meetings, and has also participated in ASH and NHLBI sponsored hypertension symposia. Dr. Handler developed an interactive educational module for physicians, which was credited with improving hypertension control performance.

Since 2003, Dr. Handler has led the Southern California Kaiser hypertension program, and since 2006 has been the national Kaiser Permanente Care Management Institute clinical hypertension lead. Kaiser has eight national regions with 8 million members, and the Southern California region contains 13 hospital based service areas with more than 3 million members. As national clinical lead, he heads the hypertension treatment guidelines development team. A simple drug treatment algorithm is credited as an important factor contributing to a hypertension control rate of 80% for the California regions, compared to 55% five years ago. He is also a member of the national Kaiser Integrated Cardiovascular Health Care Management Institute core group developing national priorities and implementation strategies for cardiovascular health initiatives.

In 2008, Joel was appointed to the expert panel of the 8th Joint National Committee on High Blood Pressure (JNC8), and also to the NHLBI Guidelines Implementation Work group. Dr. Handler completed his undergraduate work at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania followed by medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, and residency at the University of California, San Diego.
