Glaucia E. Callera, PhD
Dr Glaucia Callera is a Research Associate and New Investigator
in the Kidney Research Centre of the Ottawa Health Research Institute
at the University of Ottawa. She completed her BSc (Pharmacy), M.Sc.
and Ph.D (pharmacology) at the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
During her first post-doctoral fellowship, under the supervision
of Dr Rita Tostes, she developed an interest in oxidative stress
and inflammatory processes related to the endothelin-1 system in
DOCA-salt hypertension. In 2003 she pursued a second post-doctoral
fellowship in Canada under the supervision of Dr Rhian Touyz where
she focused on molecular mechanisms of hypertension. Since 2007,
as a Research Associate she developed an independent line of research
investigating the signaling pathways whereby aldosterone induces
cardiovascular effects, specifically in relation to hypertension.
She has made some very important and novel contributions, which have
been published in high impact journals. Her contributions as a young
scientist have been recognized by The Heart and Stroke Foundation
of Canada, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Quebec
Hypertension Society from which she received fellowships and scholarships.
In addition she is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards,
including The Merck Sharp and Dohme New Investigator Award of the
Inter-American Society of Hypertension, the Research Award of Excellence
from the University of Ottawa and the New Investigator Award from
the Council for High Blood Pressure Research, AHA. Her research program
aims at understanding the molecular and cellular basis of vascular
inflammation as it relates to the pathophysiology of hypertension
and renal disease. Specific areas of research include aldosterone
signal transduction, and caveolae/lipid raft- mediated proliferation
and inflammation.
