The Hypertension Specialists Program was formed by the American Society of Hypertension, Inc. (ASH) in 1998 in response to the growing recognition that the hypertension problem requires the coordinated effort of front-line health care providers and those physicians with documented expertise in managing hypertension. While the Hypertension Specialist Program—managed by the Professional Testing Corporation (PTC) - was established as a separate corporation serving as the TESTING AND CERTIFYING body for those health professionals wishing to become Certified Hypertension Specialists or Certified Hypertension Clinicians, the American Society of Hypertension as a separate corporation serves as the EDUCATING body for the same audience.

The Hypertension Specialists Program offers two certifications:

  1. The Specialist in Clinical Hypertension certification (SCH) identifies and recognizes physicians with expert skills and mastery of a defined body of knowledge in the management of clinical hypertension and related disorders. These physicians can act as local and regional consultants for the more complex and difficult cases and also assist in advice regarding guidelines and process improvement. 1. The Certified Hypertension Clinician certification (CHC) was launched in 2015 to identify and recognize NPs, Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists and Primary Care physicians with expert skills and knowledge in the management of clinical hypertension. Through showing mastery of a defined body of knowledge in clinical hypertension, this certification is meant provide recognition of the expertise of these healthcare clinicians and demonstrate their commitment to the highest standards of hypertension patient care. The next CHC examination period is August 26 - September 9, 2017, with an application deadline of July 31, 2017.
