Barry J. Materson, MD, MBA Honored With Lifetime Achievement Award

Barry J. Materson, M.D., M.B.A., professor of medicine in the Divisions of Clinical Pharmacology and Hospital Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and former American Society of Hypertension Board Member and Secretary, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control at the organization’s annual professional educational meeting on October 29 in Charleston, South Carolina. The award recognizes an outstanding clinician or basic scientist working in the southeastern United States who has contributed substantially to the enhancement of and knowledge in the fields of hypertension and cardiovascular research.

In more than four decades at the Miller School, Dr. Materson has worked on the cutting edge of hypertension research. Early on, he developed a simplified method for measuring kidney function that eventually led to work on new diuretic agents and their use in treating high blood pressure; work on other anti-hypertensive agents followed.

“This is a great honor to be recognized in this way and it is something I clearly cherish,” Dr. Materson said about the award. “Early in my career I was very fortunate to be able to work under the tutelage of the late Dr. Edward D. Fries, one of the pioneers of hypertension research. His landmark trials in the Department of Veterans Affairs hospital system paved the way for much of the clinical research that followed in the field of hypertension.”

Dr. Materson has had a leadership role in the Consortium for Southeastern Hypertension Control and is a Fellow of the American Society of Hypertension and a certified clinical hypertension specialist.
